Gateway to golden years opens for pensioners on Hope Island
PAT and Trevor Thomas are among the many retirees to settle on the Gold Coast.
The couple have bought a home in the Halcyon Waters gated community at Hope Island.
Mrs Thomas says they have lived there for just over four years and during that time they have become even more certain they made the right decision.
‘‘Before that, we had been travelling Australia for three years,’’ Mrs Thomas says.
‘‘And before that, we lived at Moore Park Beach, just out of Bundaberg.’’
Before Bundaberg, the couple lived in Adelaide.
When it came to settling on a retirement location, Mrs Thomas says they took into account their daughter was in Melbourne and they wanted to easily travel to see her.
Hope Island is well placed, about halfway between Brisbane Airport and Coolangatta Airport, making it easy to fly interstate.
‘‘We had had a look all around Australia at retirement villages and over-50s communities,’’ Mrs Thomas says.
‘‘When we walked in here, my eyes lit up.’’
Mrs Thomas says that it was not just the beautiful community or the house that appealed to her, but the area surrounding it, as well as access to facilities.
‘‘And at this end of the Coast, for us, it is a bit quieter than the other end,’’ she says.
Being near the beach was a big plus for Mrs Thomas, as they had lived near the beach in Bundaberg and enjoyed the lifestyle.
Having a hospital nearby was also top of the list, as the couple have both had hip replacements.
‘‘There is an abundance of shopping centres around the place, which is great, as well as public transport,’’ she says.
‘‘Everything we need us, really.’’
