Federation history retained
BUILT by William Francis Corbett 100 years ago, this brick-constructed Federation home in Spring Hill spans three levels.
The builder left his mark on the home with his initials remaining on plaster designs in the hallway.
Also remaining are many features from the Federation period with Avondale including leadlight windows, period light shades, pressed metal ceilings, picture rails and cornices.
The home became a boarding house in the 1950s before being renovated and restored and also extended in the late 1980s.
An impressive covered veranda runs around three sides of the ground floor with the main entry featuring leadlight glass leading into a carpeted hallway displaying high ceilings.
There are two bedrooms to the left with sash windows and carpet. Opposite are a carpeted study and a separate library with a fireplace and both rooms feature carpet and sash windows.
A formal lounge, with adjacent staircase to the upper and lower levels, leads to the veranda and also has a fireplace and carpet.
Added in the 1980s was a formal dining room and family room with tiled floor which flows to a courtyard at the rear of the residence.
Next to the extension is an original part of the floorplan now featuring a kitchen overlooking a meals area with cork flooring.
Boasting stainless steel appliances including double oven, gas cooktop, teppanyaki plate and rangehood, the kitchen, with nearby pantry, also includes a breakfast bar and timber cabinetry.
Also included in the floorplan on this level is a tiled bathroom with separate shower and bathtub and laundry which leads to an outside drying area.
The upper level was renovated in the 1980s with the main bedroom looking towards the city and including a dressing room and two walk-in wardrobes, a marble ensuite with spa bath and separate shower, plantation shutters, carpet, leadlight glass and Juliet balcony through French doors.
Two further carpeted bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and leadlight glass and are serviced by a tiled bathroom. There is also a rumpus area. On the lower level is a two-car garage, wine cellar, storage areas and carpeted multi-purpose room with a separate entrance.
Other features include airconditioning and an alarm system.
The rear courtyard includes a water feature.
At the front of the residence, built on an 885sq m block, a hedge shields the main entrance.
