Charm of bygone era in every nook
STEEPED in history, Wanstead was built about 1889, looking to the Brisbane River in Toowong.
Named Bittal, the property underwent name changes and different owners before being relocated to the Red Cedar Estate in Pullenvale on a 1ha site about 20 years ago.
It was given its present name in 1899 by a bank official, and boasts many traditional characteristics and design features from the high Victorian period.
Highlights of the property include cedar cabinetry, an original two-sided marble fireplace, wide verandas, 3.6m ceilings, detailed cast-iron balustrades and timber fretwork.
The property has been restored to its original style and is surrounded by established gardens.
Other features include polished timber flooring, picture rails, VJ walls, window hoods, french doors, original glass, decorative arches, breezeways and sash windows.
The covered veranda wraps around three sides of the residence and features decorative cast-iron balustrades, with the high Victorian portal entrance leading into a central hallway.
On the left of the hallway is an impressive lounge and dining room, which can be divided by timber doors. Sash windows and french doors provide a light and spacious environment, with the dining room boasting a marble fireplace.
Also adjacent to the hallway and looking to the front of the residence is the main bedroom featuring sash windows, french doors and a walk-in wardrobe leading to an ensuite with a shower and tiled floor.
The sleeping quarters are confined to the right of the floorplan and two nearby bedrooms have access to a twoway ensuite featuring a standalone bathtub and shower.
French doors lead from one of the bedrooms to the veranda while the other sleeping area has an adjacent sitting room.
Towards the rear of the design is a bedroom with carpet flooring.
With views towards an inground pool is a second lounge room and informal meals area. The space includes a marble fireplace, sash windows and french doors opening to the veranda.
The floorplan flows into a kitchen featuring marble benchtops, timber cabinetry and an extra-wide Ilve oven and gas cooktop.
At the rear of the floorplan are a laundry, study and bathroom with a separate bathtub and shower.
There is also garage parking for two vehicles.
