What was it that drove its quirky 1957 de­sign by James Bir­rell? An­swers may be found at Hot Mod­ernism: build­ing mod­ern Queens­land 1945-75, an ex­hi­bi­tion (un­til Oc­to­ber 12) at the State Li­brary of Queens­land in part­ner­ship with UQ. It's a cel­e­bra­tion of the ar­chi­tec­ture of post-World War II Queens­land when mod­ernist prin­ci­ples blended with sub­trop­i­cal liv­ing, cre­at­ing a unique built en­vi­ron­ment.
