Having spent some time – but nearly not enough – in France and devouring almost every book on what makes the French tick, I’m as curious as any other Queensland woman who struggles to pull off that effortlessly elegant look that seems to be in the Gallic genes. English actor Charlotte Rampling once said: “French women have been made beautiful by the French people – they’re very aware of their bodies, the way they move and speak, they’re very confident of their sexuality.” But what is the truth behind the stereotypes – you know the ones, that French women don’t get fat, never have plastic surgery (they just age well), and can wear jeans and a white T-shirt and look like a supermodel? In this week’s Qweekend, Susan Johnson speaks with Paris-based author Marie-Morgane Le Moël ahead of her upcoming Brisbane visit and discovers that all is not as it seems. What a blessed relief!
