The word that best describes me is inquisitive.

My earliest memory is … standing in front of the mirror twirling in a white pleated skirt I wore to Sunday school. My first job was … as a waitress in a Melbourne restaurant called The Cottage. It was expensive, and I was 15 and amazed at the exorbitant tips. The worst job I ever had was … with a real estate developer; my job was to ring agents and ask if they had anything for sale. It wasn’t what I thought I was going to be doing and I quit after three days. The skill I’d like to have is … balancing my books. My most unappealing habit is … leaving the teapot with the tea leaves in it. My most treasured possession is … a leadlight window that my father made; it goes wherever I go. The word that best describes me is … inquisitive. My favourite smell is … perfumed flowers: gardenia, lilac, wisteria. An author whose work I love is … Stephen King; he really engages the reader. Songs I can’t help singing along to are … Respect, as sung by Aretha Franklin, and Push it by Salt-N-Pepa. The question people always ask me is … What colour should I paint my house? My favourite pastime is … going away with girlfriends and laughing until we cry. My greatest achievement has been … the last one, in this case my book. The places I’d really love to live are … Provence, Paris and Manhattan. My next challenge is … hopefully to do a TV show where I help people do up homes to live in, not to sell. ALISON WALSH
