The Courier-Mail - Weekend Shopper - - Front Page -

the Easter break around the corner, there’s never been a better time to enjoy a spot of camping.

However, for those who haven’t got a tent stacked away in the garage, Weekend Shopper Camping section includes useful camping items such as $130 six-person dome tents, $20 eskies and $95 fold-up beds.

Queensland’s national parks are also a great way for city-dwellers to absorb a more natural way of life.

From Cape York to Brisbane and Birdsville to Mt Isa, these parks offer a beautiful way to relax with family and friends.

Tourism and Visitor Services director Anne Greentree from the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) is unsurprised by camping’s popularity.

“Camping is one of Queensland’s most popular holiday choices as it’s very affordable and can be tailored to suit individual tastes,” she said. “It’s also an opportunity to experience the Australian bush in its natural state.

“Native trees and shrubs grow around each campground so there’s a good chance of seeing animals in their own habitat.”

Ms Greentree said Queensland’s national parks had special experiences camper trailers and caravans,” she said.

“But it’s a good idea to pack a gas or liquid fuel stove as open fires are prohibited in many parks.

“Where fires are allowed, firewood is usually not supplied and collecting firewood from the bush is prohibited.”

Other essential camping items include bags for rubbish and storage, drinking water, insect repellent, hats and sunscreen, a first-aid kit, a torch, and a radio with spare batteries.

Camping permits and fees are also compulsory in DERM’s national parks.

“If you’re planning to camp during peak holiday times such as Easter, book your campsite well in advance as there’s a high demand for them during these periods,” Ms Greentree said.

“Most camping areas can be booked online at www.qld.gov.au/camping, by visiting an over-the-counter booking office or by phoning 137 468.”

Regardless of when and where campers plan to take a break, Weekend Shopper remains the perfect place for every camping expedition to begin.
