Affordable pets for everyone

The Courier-Mail - Weekend Shopper - - WEEKENDSHOPPER -

THOSE without much room to spare and who have children longing for a pet are sure to find a suitable furry friend in Weekend Shopper’s Pets section.

Guinea pigs, or cavies as they are often called, are a popular first pet for children and can be sold and bought in Shopper.

According to Kathryn Mckay from the Cavy Owners and Breeders Society of Queensland (COBS) committee, these small animals are delightful creatures which make ideal pets for adults and children.

“Guinea pigs are affordable pets for anyone looking for something a little different to a cat or dog,” Ms Mckay said.

“They don’t require the same space as larger pets and are less costly to feed, plus they are available in a combination of colours and a variety of different fur types.”

Ms Mckay said people should not be surprised to see these small pets constantly eating as with their very high metabolism, they required plenty of fuel.

“The natural diet of guinea pigs is grass, but they can also be given carrots, capsicums, tomatoes, bok choy, parsley, pumpkin, orange sweet potato, watermelon, corn on the cob (including the husks), cucumbers, and coriander,” she said.
