Dope the great hope for pain suf­fer­ers


FED­ERAL MPs push­ing to le­galise medic­i­nal cannabis say they hope leg­is­la­tion can pass by the year’s end, with the is­sue en­joy­ing broad sup­port from all sides of pol­i­tics.

A Bill by Greens leader Richard Di Natale – with the sup­port of Lib­eral, La­bor and In­de­pen­dent sen­a­tors – is likel ly to be de­bated in a cou­ple of months af­ter a par­lia­men­tary c com­mit­tee rec­om­mended it p pass with some changes.

Prime Min­is­ter Tony Ab­bott has al­ready sig­nalled he sup­ports the is­sue, as Health Min­is­ter Sus­san Ley (pic­tured) yesterday com­mit­ted to con­sider the com­mit­tee’s re­port.

“This Gov­ern­ment is in­cred­i­bly sym­pa­thetic to the suf­fer­ing of those Aus­tralians with de­bil­i­tat­ing chronic pain and ill­nesses and we want to en­sure they get ac­cess to the most ef­fec­tive med­i­cal treat­ments avail­able,” Ms Ley said.
