Flood cri­sis hits 11,000


LU­JAN: More than 11,000 peo­ple have been evac­u­ated from parts of Ar­gentina’s largest province af­ter heavy week­end rains caused rivers to rise.

Na­tional Se­cu­rity Sec­re­tary Ser­gio Ber­nia said that the 11,000 peo­ple were evac­u­ated from 39 mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties in Buenos Aires province.

Emer­gency work­ers were forced to tra­verse the province’s streets in boats.

Tor­ren­tial rains in the province brought falls of 350mm in some ar­eas, which is a record.

Author­i­ties said the Ar­recifes River reached nearly 9m, al­most twice its usual level.
