DUTCH rider Tom Du­moulin edged out Chris Froome in a fran­tic fi­nale to claim vic­tory and the over­all race lead on the 10th stage of Spain’s Vuelta yesterday.

The Gi­ant-Alpecin rider ac­cel­er­ated past Froome on the fi­nal 100m of a cat­e­gory one climb to the fin­ish of the 168.3km stage from Torrevieja to Cum­bre del Sol to win in a time of 4hr 09min 55sec.

Froome, aim­ing to be­come just the third man to win the Tour de France and the Vuelta in the same year, was two sec­onds back, with Spain’s Joaquim Ro­driguez in third.

Du­moulin now leads the over­all stand­ings by 57sec from Ro­driguez.
