The Courier-Mail - - NEWS -

WOMEN are being warned the latest fitness obsession for “ripped abs” could actually be unhealthy, with experts worried young women are pushing themselves to dangerous extremes to achieve toned stomachs.

Apps like Instagram are fuelling the rise of the “female six pack”, with celebrities and “fitspiration” bloggers posting photons of their muscular stomachs with hashtags like “ab goals” that are raking millions of likes and shares.

The trend is also dominating fashion runways.

University of Sydney health sciences lecturer Dr Rhonda Orr said while there were benefits to having a toned stomach, it was unhealthy to focus on “just one body part”.
