Olympian’s wife goes free

The Courier-Mail - - NEWS -

THE wife of former Olympic swimmer Neil Brooks has walked free from a Brisbane court and is set to fly out to her luxurious Bali villa.

Linda Brooks, 45, was in Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with defrauding Gold Coast businessman Glenn Melcheck of $1.95 million in 2008. She has been charged with her husband.

Mrs Brooks was granted bail yesterday by Magistrate Suzette Coates, and Queensland Police returned her passport so she could return to Bali where she “has significant business interests”.

Lawyer Daniel Hannay told the court Mrs Brooks had “fears of retribution” and for the safety of her nine-year-old son, asking that her Balinese address be suppressed from publication. Magistrate Coates declined: “Why? It is an open court, it is like anybody else, I ask them what their address is.”

The case will return to court on December 11, but the Brooks are not required to appear.
