MORE than 30 Italian grandmothers will line up for nonna’s slipper toss at Festitalia tomorrow.

The annual Italian festival’s event manager Nella Alba-Calabrese said entrants in the tongue-in-cheek competition had to be older than 70 and be a grandmother. “The slipper toss came about from a meme that is popular in the Italian community that says you can get your mum and your grandmother in a game of cricket and they can’t hit a ball with a bat, but if you do something wrong and they see it from the kitchen they can hit you in the back of the head with a slipper with absolute accuracy.”

The nonna that can throw the slipper the farthest will take the title.

Festitalia will be held on at Spencer Park, Newmarket, tomorrow from 11am to 6pm.

Other highlights include flag throwers, historical re-enactments, pizza acrobat Youssef Ben-Touati and gelato and cannoli eating competitions.
