Manipulate your Marker during the HSC
THE Higher School Certificate can be stressful for many students, but it’s all about preparation says Mitchell Grotte, author of Manipulating Your Marker.
Mr Grotte gave seminars on technique analysis, essay writing and creative writing at the Grafton library to help HSC students prepare for assessments and final exams.
“In the current landscape there is a lot of noise, like online resources, and everyone fishes from the same pond in terms of resources, quotes and deconstructions of texts,” he said. “When you do that you have no chance of meaningfully standing out as an individual.
“The problem with marking is teachers have the impossible job of reading through hundreds of similar responses. When they read the same thing over and over you can understand the results blend into one.”
Mr Grotte’s passion is to empower students to answer questions using their individual flair and creative expression.
“It is the ultimate product of the entirety of schooling, but at the end of the day it doesn’t need to be feared.
“One of the main problems I have identified is because teachers have 30 students within a class, they need to make sure they get the bare bones in their lessons so the students can take advantage of that.
“The problem there is when dealing with misbehaving students or someone who hasn’t done their homework, there isn’t enough time for a lot of the most sophisticated information to get put across.
“The reason I wrote Manipulate Your Marker is to make sure those students have the ability to access that. It’s a study survival guide because then they can look at these sophisticated ideas at their own pace and in a accessible way, so any student of any ability can pick it up and learn from it.”
