On the heels of Good Will Hunting, for which he received widespread critical acclaim, director Gus Van Sant chose this project, for which he received a tidal wave of derision. So why did he choose to remake, in colour, Hitchcock’s immortal serial-killer thriller? Out of sheer curiosity, he simply wanted to bring it to a new generation of viewers who might otherwise never find the time to invest interest in the Master’s cinematic opus. So give him a break! Curiosity should never really kill the cat. The cast is adequate, the photography is polished, and the mood is uneasy, but ultimately it’s an ineffectual replication.
