MODERN TAKE ON AN AUSSIE CLASSIC
PICNIC At Hanging Rock has a daunting heritage to live up to but one of the stars of the new TV show is confident it will prove an Australian classic – much like the revered movie and book.
“We’re saying much more about the girls’ history, where they come from, and where they want to go, really,” Madeleine Madden said, comparing the miniseries to the 1975 Peter Weir film.
The granddaughter of Aboriginal rights activist Charles Perkins plays Marion, a bright girl of mixed race.
“She’s a character that is just way before her time, but also a trailblazer for future generations of women – she’s not going to have the kind of future that all of our other girls will, in terms of being married off or whatever,” Madden said of her character.
