Saturday Food warriors
5PM FREE FESTIVAL
Food Fight, The Battle For Food Security, Bigge Park, Liverpool; foodfight.org.au Bigge Park at Liverpool will go nuts this evening as the subject of food security goes into the mixing bowl with a splash of art and a generous sprinkle of music and performance. Pictured here are five of the fabulous Food Warriors who will engage in an artistchoreographed food fight at the culmination of the event.
Left to right, they are Dr Jason Reynolds who lectures in biogeochemistry at the University of Western Sydney, Alexandra Iljadica of the Youth Food Movement, artist and forager Diego Bonetto aka The Weedy One, Pastor Mick Agius, who runs a program to feed the homeless, and Paniora Nukunuku, whose work includes volunteering with breakfast programs for young people. Food security, we learn, is the universal right to nutritious, affordable, culturally appropriate food. This event aims to highlight issues like the number of Australian kids who don’t get breakfast or who go to bed without food (nearly one million a day) and the amount of food that gets thrown away by the average household (one fifth of the total grocery shop).
Today’s event is a C3West initiative, where the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia unites artists with businesses and local governments in Western Sydney. With Food Fight, the MCA has collaborated also with Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Liverpool City Council. Attractions during the event will include a night food market, live cooking shows, a DJ, soap box performances, nutrition chats with roving Food Security Guards, and lots of local involvement.
