Everything fell into place

For Kristine Nguyen, the first birthday of her twins Sienna and Sebastian was cause for a big party. She started organising the party when they were three months old, hiring a harbourside venue, a stylist for her dessert table, kids entertainment and a professional photographer. She says: “I started researching and organising when they were three months old. I just wanted to have an idea of different venues, then once we booked a function room at the Deckhouse in Woolwich, everything fell into place.

We had an events manager there and finalised all the numbers and the food two weeks before the day of the birthday. It was quite easy. They sent us the event plan and the layout of the room and organised a lot of the venue stuff.

We hired Than Tran to style our dessert table — she also styled a dessert table for Michael and Kyly Clarke’s daughter’s christening. I just asked for pastel pink and green and some gold, and said they could style the rest. We had a Forever Friends theme — I love the bears — and that was the brief I gave her. She did everything within two weeks and set it all up and took it down. I didn’t have to do any of that.

The restaurant took care of all the food. It was an alternate drop service, like at a wedding, and it was a three-course menu. It was quite expensive, but we only had close friends, so about 50 people all up.

I didn’t have a budget as my husband knew I’d like to have something memorable. There’s nothing wrong with a community hall, but because there are two of them, I wanted something g special.

We had another party at home with extended family the followingwing week.

I’ve had friends say it’s s pretty extravagant for a first birthday, thday, but we have two kids and I felt lt if we didn’t do anything speciall I’d feel a bit on the lazy side.

But this will be the biggest thing for them until their 21st — that’s it.. We didn’t even bother having a party for their second birthday, the first took its toll on us with all the organising.

Our friends really enjoyed it. I still remember it quite fondly, the twins were up the wholeole day, but they got really cranky after we cut the cake.ake. It was also really nice for us to have the time to catch up with friends.

Having twins, I hardly went out the first year. I chatted with friendsriends we hadn’t spoken to in months.”
