Calling Australia home

A ussie supermodel Elyse Taylor never thought she’d still be modelling at 31.

After all, she thought by 25 models were considered “over the hill”. The Sydney-born beauty packed her bags to move to New York at just 17-years-old. Fourteen years later, she’s still living — and working — there with her modelling more in demand than ever. “I didn’t think it would last this long,” she told BW Magazine. “Back then when I started modelling it was like ‘at 25 you’re over the hill’, but I’m still modelling, with a daughter (four-year-old Lila).

“Back then no one was (over 25) and now I feel like everyone is in their thirties and everyone has one or two kids and it’s become the norm,” she says.

“I think women want to see women that they relate to, with children.”

While her base is still in the US (her daughter’s father and ex-partner Seth Campbell lives there) Taylor’s connection to Australia is still strong.

The Victoria’s Secret model signed a five-year deal with Australia’s number one mineral make-up brand, Nude By Nature, which saw her jet back into Sydney last week to launch their new 100 per cent natural Lips Collection.

“I’m constantly badgering my agency in Australia to bring me home and spent time here and promote Australian brands,” she said. “This is my home, this is where my family is, my parents are here, my true good friends.

“I have great relationships with photographers and brands, I know so many people here. I feel very fortunate to be able to come home and still be able to work in Australia, it means quite a lot to me.”

Taylor says she’s tried to make sure her daughter Lila is in touch with her Australian heritage, even though “all the things she cares about right now are rainbows, unicorns and sparkles”.

“She knows that Mummy gets on an aeroplane and goes to work; she knows grandma is from Australia and it’s really far, far away,” Taylor says.

“She wears a cossie, and when it’s too hot we take off the doona, so I want to make her as Australian as possible even though she has an American accent.”
