How to create a fun and functional garage space

It has a lot more uses than just providing a space for undercover parking, writes Jennifer Veerhuis

They’re meant for your car, but too often garages are little more than a storage shed for household junk. With space at a premium in many homes, the garage is the spot for all that stuff that doesn’t seem to fit anywhere else.

Garage Blitz director and owner Jamie Fitzgerald says the garage is an obvious place for people to store their goods.

“In places like Sydney the cost of building is so expensive so owners use almost all the space available and a lot of places won’t have any room for storage,” he says.

“If you’ve got things like canoes, kayaks or you’re into mountain bikes, they need to go somewhere — and the best place for that is the garage.”

Howards Storage World organising expert Cathy Player says garages can be used to store everything from gardening gear, sporting equipment, suitcases and tools through to dad’s brewing kit and the dog kennel.

“Ski gear, camping gear, sporting equipment, picnic baskets, canoes, beach umbrellas, even the Christmas decorations all need to go somewhere,” she says.

“In a standard household with a two-car garage, it’s almost a luxury to use both sides of the garage for cars today.

“If you don’t have an attic or an alternative storage area, then it’s almost inevitable that you’ll need to have a good storage system in the garage.”

Squeezing the most out of it

Bunnings national storage buyer Daniel Gibney says customers are now more inspired than ever to use the space in their garage to its fullest potential.

“For a complete garage solution, mixing shelving units with cabinets delivers a great result,” he says.

“This combination provides the ability for maximising storage space with shelves while being able to lock away dangerous goods such as chemicals or power tools.”

Daniel says the Romak garage storage range from Bunnings offers cabinets and shelving kits in matching heights and depths to maximise any garage space and provide a tidy looking garage.

“For people looking for a heavy duty solution, the Rack It system offers a 750kg shelf rating and it is easy to assemble so it can be customised to suit individual needs,” Daniel says.

For people looking to create a good working space for their projects, Daniel says the Ultimate Garage system provides a greatlooking yet functional work bench, cabinet and under bench cabinet storage that is durable and will safely store all of their tools for easy access.

“For a complete storage solution, a garage cabinet such as the Qiq Fix two-door cabinet is built tough to ensure it lasts and is less likely to rust, including lockable doors to keep your items safe,” says Daniel.

This garage (above) designed by architect Mark Szczerbicki doubles as a play space when not used for parking.
