This trend set to firm its position this year involves not just including natives but sourcing plants endemic to your local area.

Matt Leacy is a big fan of this approach but says it can sometimes be a little tricky to put into practice.

“We occasionally get this request from clients, which I completely encourage and respect,” he says. “But if there is not a local nursery growing these plants, it can be a little difficult to achieve.

“It may be that a nursery has to find and grow these plants specially which can take a little extra time and money.”

If it’s a bit too hard, Matt says choosing from a broader selection of native Australian plants is the next best option.

“It’s worth considering given Australia has one of the highest amounts of endemic species in the world.”
