Wel­com­ing a brand new baby into your fam­ily is an ex­cit­ing time but it is also a pe­riod of great up­heaval — es­pe­cially if you are ex­pect­ing your first child.

In ad­di­tion to all the prepa­ra­tions for the enor­mous change in your life, you also have to con­sider a few changes to the way things work at home.

“The key to cre­at­ing a per­fect nurs­ery is to bal­ance pretty aes­thet­ics and func­tion — with­out hav­ing to spend too much money,” says in­te­rior de­signer Jus­tine Wilson from Vault In­te­ri­ors.

“Most of the items you will re­quire now will need to be flex­i­ble and prob­a­bly swapped out as your child grows, so don’t in­vest too much in any one item.”
