It’s pos­si­ble to pick the age of a build­ing based on its de­sign, so in the in­ter­ests of longevity keep it sim­ple.

“Don’t add any­thing that’s pe­riod re­lated, like colo­nial or Fed­er­a­tion ex­tras, be­cause fash­ions like that come and go,” says Claren­don Homes’ group de­sign man­ager, Lester Cham­bers. Just keep it sim­ple. “You don’t have to go crazy and throw ev­ery­thing at it,” Lester says. “When it comes to the fin­ished prod­uct, look at the house in its en­tirety — in­clud­ing land­scap­ing.”
