Floor lamps are a great way to inject your own style into a rental and some landlords will give permission to tenants to change light fittings.

“Lighting is something that can make a huge difference, even changing the globes,” says Libby from Coco Republic. “Putting an ambient light globe in can soften the light in the room and make it a much warmer space, instead of a cool, sterile area.”

She says putting up your own curtains can also make a big difference.

“If you’re not loving what’s there, it might be as simple as just taking it all down, storing it for the duration of your lease and putting a temporary solution up,” she says

While you can’t generally change the flooring when you’re renting, Libby says a carefully chosen rug can have a big impact on a room.

“Rugs in themselves can be artwork,” she says. “They can give so much life and definition to a space.”
