SSM voting battle hits new heights

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) - - News -

COMEDIAN Magda Szubanski hopes Australians can “find it in their hearts” to vote yes in the same-sex marriage postal survey, as both sides of the debate launched their official campaigns over the weekend.

In Sydney, a sky-written “Vote No” turned heads above the city midmorning yesterday just as Yes campaigners — including former prime minister Tony Abbott’s sister Christine Forster — gathered at Leichardt to launch their campaign. Speaking at the Sydney launch, Ms Forster, a Liberal councillor, accused the No campaign of trying to confuse voters. “The No campaign is trying to muddy the waters with issues that are not related,” she said.

Coalition for Marriage spokeswoman Monica Doumit said the skywriting was not organised by official campaigners, but likely to have come from “grassroots” advocates.

“It was lovely to see people starting to feel more confident about speaking up,” she said.
