St Louis riot as cop freed

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) - - World -

Protests turned violent for the second night on Saturday after the acquittal of a white former St Louis police officer in the fatal shooting of a black man.

The confrontation took place in the suburb of University City, which had been the scene of a peaceful march that ended with organisers calling for people to leave.

But a small group of protesters refused to go, leading to hundreds of police in riot gear eventually moving in.

The sudden eruption of violence had followed a day of peaceful demonstrations.
