Kids give horse the hard Fell

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) - - The Everest - CHRIS HARRIS

FELL Swoop is a fierce competitor on the track but away from the spotlight of racing he’s a different beast.

Amy Dale, the wife of the champion horse’s trainer Matt Dale, said Fell Swoop had a real soft spot for children.

“We went down there on the weekend with the kids, usually the kids feed him some grass,” she said. “The horse responds really well to the kids — they can be quite flighty with the adults, they’re really gentle with the kids.”

The rags to riches racehorse was bought for a bargain $45,000 and has since racked up winnings of $1.6 million in prizemoney. And since Fell Swoop was selected for a spot in the $10 million Everest the entire Dale family and “all of Canberra” has got behind him.

The horse might be a long shot today ($51) but Ms Dale said son Billy, 3, will be cheering on Fell Swoop on dad Matt no matter what as he is their No.1 fan.

“He has been missing his dad a bit, he has been saying, ‘Daddy daddy race’ for the last few days,” she said.
