Guns are not for chil­dren

The last thing we need in this coun­try is any re­lax­ation to gun laws that would al­low chil­dren to have li­cences (“Nats fac­ing a high noon”, 13/10).

It’s all very well to say that if they are prop­erly ed­u­cated on the dan­gers it won’t be a prob­lem, but the re­al­ity is they are just kids. And we all know kids are more likely than adults to act im­pul­sively with­out any re­gard for the con­se­quences.

We also know that bul­ly­ing is a big prob­lem in schools. If a child is trained in the use of firearms and gets bul­lied, how do we know they won’t take their gun to school and shoot the bully? Will their par­ents ac­cept the mur­der rap on their be­half? Bernard Thomp­son, Cowra
