Laws tak­ing aim at spies

FOR­EIGN spies and lob­by­ists will be tar­geted un­der sweep­ing new laws to fight back against in­creas­ing over­seas in­ter­fer­ence with Aus­tralia’s po­lit­i­cal sys­tem.

The suite of laws will be in­tro­duced in Par­lia­ment later this month, and will also out­law for­eign po­lit­i­cal do­na­tions.

The leg­is­la­tion, based on a six-month re­view of ex­ist­ing laws, will in­tro­duce new crim­i­nal of­fences for covert for­eign in­ter­fer­ence, while also strength­en­ing of­fences that deal with es­pi­onage, sab­o­tage and trea­son.
