A sa­lute to those who en­dured

They fought for same-sex rights when it wasn’t a trendy cause. Trail­blaz­ers Ker­ryn Phelps and Jackie Stricker-Phelps were outed by a news­pa­per be­fore they were ready, with the rev­e­la­tion up-end­ing their life and cru­elling job op­por­tu­ni­ties. They risked so much to fight for gay mar­riage, decades be­fore oth­ers took up the cause. They per­se­vered be­cause they are soul­mates. And their love took them to the cor­ri­dors of Can­berra and saw them ar­gue with Ju­lia Gil­lard, Kevin Rudd, Tony Ab­bott and count­less other MPs. Their per­sis­tence was un­re­lent­ing. To­day, mar­riage equal­ity has many he­roes. The MPs who kept at it when si­lenced by su­pe­ri­ors. The stars who came out pub­licly. And Mal­colm Turn­bull who fi­nally de­liv­ered the his­toric re­form that di­vided our coun­try for too long.
