SYDNEY is finally plunging into summer, with the city expected to experience its first 40C day this side of winter next week.

Bureau of Meteorologist forecaster Rob Taggart said “hot conditions are coming in a big way” for the city and the West.

“The current forecast is 32C for the city and 40C for the west on Wednesday,” Mr Taggart said. “The new week will start off fairly warm, 31C in the west on Sunday, and warming up from there.”

Penrith hit a sizzling 34C yesterday while the city felt the heat at 31C.

A cool change will reach the city today but will be gone by Sunday.

Sydneysiders Fiona Hardless and Russell Davies made the most of yesterday’s warmth, taking a dip at a plunge pool and bar set up by Pier One Hotel on the harbour.
