A BRIEF HISTORY OF HIS TIME
1963: While still a 21-year-old student, Stephen Hawking is diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and is told he will have five years to live.
1965: Marries first wife Jane Wilde.
1973: Dr Hawking discovers that black holes leaked radiation, particles and were capable of exploding.
1974: Publishes theory “Black Hole Explosions”.
1988: His book A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes becomes a bestseller across the world.
1995: Marries his nurse Elaine Mason.
2004: Admits that black holes may allow information within them to escape — a stark juxtaposition from three decades of arguing that they destroy everything that fall into them.
2007: Divorces Elaine Mason.
2014: Biopic The Theory of Everything wins best actor Oscar for Eddie Redmayne, who plays Hawking (left).
