1973: Dr Hawk­ing dis­cov­ers that black holes leaked ra­di­a­tion, par­ti­cles and were ca­pa­ble of ex­plod­ing.

1974: Pub­lishes the­ory “Black Hole Ex­plo­sions”.

1988: His book A Brief His­tory of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes be­comes a best­seller across the world.

1995: Mar­ries his nurse Elaine Ma­son.

2004: Ad­mits that black holes may al­low in­for­ma­tion within them to es­cape — a stark jux­ta­po­si­tion from three decades of ar­gu­ing that they de­stroy every­thing that fall into them.

2007: Divorces Elaine Ma­son.

2014: Biopic The The­ory of Every­thing wins best ac­tor Os­car for Ed­die Red­mayne, who plays Hawk­ing (left).
