Food bowl our goalpost

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) - - Letters -

Could it be this simple? Say, a 20year masterplan to irrigate our vast arid areas, design and construct a retention system which captures, processes and disperses our irregular and at times high-volume rainfall and night-time desert frosts.

We can become the food bowl for Australia and the world, with greater productivity making infrastructure, jobs, health, education and community amenities much more viable.

Affordable home ownership can become a reality for the wider population, with less dependency to live in or near the major cities.

With greater employment opportunities, self-esteem increases and medical depression and homelessness should decrease.

It is a very simple formula. We become the “luckier” country.

Can it be this simple? Our governments and opposition parties over the years have shown little evidence of having understood this. Alfred Gliddon, North Epping
