Strangler’s big bungle

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) - - World -

A husband who killed his wife and staged a fake suicide almost got away with murder — but boasted to a fellow builder in a pub days before the body was due to be cremated.

Police bungled the investigation after carpenter Derek Potter, 64, strangled Lesley, 66, his wife of 26 years.

They accepted his claim that she hanged herself in their spare bedroom. He would have got away with the killing but confided to Natalia Mikhailoea-Kisselevskaia, 32, in the pub: “I love my wife very much but she was doing my head in so I had to strangle her.’”

Potter was found guilty of murder and jailed for a minimum of 17 years.
