McCarthy set to cap off a big week
TOP Sydney reinsman Luke McCarthy is hoping birthday luck will be on his side at Tabcorp Park Menangle tonight.
The multiple Group 1 winning driver celebrated his birthday earlier in the week and a win or two tonight will top off a great week.
McCarthy has seven drives including Cash N Flow in tonight’s Group 3 feature, the Hygain Kevin Robinson Free-For-All (2300m).
The recent Melton winner has drawn barrier three and is the $2.30 TAB Fixed Odds favourite.
“He is better over the distance and the draw is perfect for him,” said McCarthy.
Cash N Flow finished ninth to Majordan last start over the mile and that performance left connections puzzled.
“He went super when winning at Melton and we were disappointed in his effort last start,” said McCarthy.
“He could have been just a little bit flat after his Melbourne trip as they couldn’t find anything wrong with him.
“He should go much better this start especially with the race being over a bit of distance.”
That was the gelding’s fifth start in Australia since being imported from New Zealand.
One of McCarthy’s drives that is first up from a spell tonight is New South Wales Trotter of the Year War Dan Destroyer.
The Michael Dolt-off-trained gelding has not raced since August but turned many heads with a recent Menangle trial win where he rated 1:54.6.
“I drove him in that trial and he went really well,” said McCarthy.
“He was going really well last preparation and he should be hard to beat.”
McCarthy has a strong strike rate with War Dan Destroyer.
He has driven the son of Majestic Son 15 times in race conditions, which has resulted in 10 wins and three placings.
A result tonight will determine if connections take War Dan Destroyer to Victoria for the Trotters Inter Dominion that starts at Melton on December 1.
A race after driving War Dan Destroyer, McCarthy has picked up the drive on the Joe Taaffetrained Tygar (race nine).
“He is probably one of my better drives of the night,” admitted McCarthy.
“He is flying at the moment and was unlucky last start and has found an easier M0 race.”
McCarthy will also have his first drive on Queensland pacer Avonnova in race one.
“It’s my first drive on him and he is close to earning $1million in prizemoney,” said McCarthy.
McCarthy has been one of the top metropolitan drivers in the state since the 2010/11 season.
