Cougars go down to Warriors
On a cold winter’s day on Sunday at Sarvaas Park the Cougars took on the Murray River Warriors.
The ladies tag would have taken the field full of confidence after last week’s great team effort but as it turned out, as they say, a week is a long time in football.
With errors coming from the Cougars it took just three minutes for the Warriors to score a converted try.
All was not lost though, after some strong tagging from the ladies, Emily Gardner scored for the Cougars.
With one minute to go Emily stole a loose ball and ran 50 metres to score again. Unfortunately neither tries were converted. After the break the Warriors kept the ladies
The Power played their worst quarter of football for the season, which cost them any chance of victory, as they went down by 37 points against Lockhart at Coreen on Saturday.
The Power started slowly with Lockhart kicking the first goal of the game, but goals to Andrew Phibbs and Jak Payne had the Power back in the game. Matthew Howard and Shannon Broadbent were finding the ball in the midfield, but Lockhart kicked the last two goals of the quarter as they took a seven-point lead into quarter time - 3.4.22 to 2.3.15. Not much can be said about the second quarter. The Power hardly touched the ball as Lockhart kicked six goals three and the Power didn’t score as the game was taken out of reach from the Power as Lockhart led by 46 points at half time - 9.7.61 to 2.3.15. After a spray from the coaches at half time, the Power improved their performance in the second half with Andrew Ollington and Tim Cooper playing well in defence. Broadbent continued to find the football while Payne presented well at half forward as the Power outscored Lockhart 4.7 to 3.4 in the second half. But it was too late as Lockhart ran out easier winners 12.11.83 to 6.10.46. Goals – Russell Anderson 2, Tom Webb, Jak Payne, Sam Haigh, Andrew Phibbs. Best – Andrew Ollington, Shannon Broadbent, Jak Payne, Nathan Rhodes, Tim Cooper, Tom Webb.

The second quarter saw the Power work hard in all areas across the ground and kick 3.1 to Lockhart 1.2 to only trail by six points at half time. Mitch Clifton, Steve Talbot, Dave Garcia, Zarvan O’Keefe were all playing well in defence. working hard and their score board ticking over. Final score was 24-8 against. In the men’s game there was plenty of feeling in the game and as the Cougars only had 13 men everybody was required to work hard.
Warriors were over in six minutes and again 15 minutes in.
But some great ball work, Braith Murphy bustled plenty of opposition to score out wide.
Warriors were able to score again before half time. Half time score 16-4 against the Cougars. During half time a shower of rain could have played into the Cougars hands and it did.
Billy Nicholls and the Bailey Muras scored tries within the first six minutes.
With CJ, Brendon Johnson converting, the scores were tied at 16-16. Onballers Doug Lavis, Josh Lewis, Mal Macartney, Brad Lewis continued to provide plenty of drive across the ground and with ruckman James Webb and George Neely never giving up. Doug Lavis was providing a great target across half forward with four goals for the game as did Nathan Allan with one goal. The third quarter saw the Power only able to kick three points to Lockhart 1.2 to take a lead of 12 points. The last quarter saw Lockhart kick two goals to the Power’s one as they ran out winners.
