Eden urges residents not to appeal

The Free Press (Corowa) - - FRONT PAGE - BY SARAH DEAN

Federation Council Administrator Mike Eden is encouraging the Howlong community to look at the conditions imposed on Cleanaway’s development application for the compost facility before launching an appeal.

Mr Eden’s plea followed the recent approval from the Joint Regional Planning Panel for Cleanaway to build a compost facility in the town’s tip, 1500 metres from the closest house.

“I am urging residents to not throw their money at an appeal,” Mr Eden said in a statement to The Free Press.

“Before making an appeal decision I would encourage residents to look at the conditions that were issued with the approval from the JRPP.

“In viewing these conditions, the community will be able to see that concerns highlighted have been addressed.”

Mr Eden acknowledged that the Howlong Compost Development had been a long and complex process for all involved.

“Council is confident that the approval decision on the Howlong Compost Facility was based on merit of the development application,” he said.

“This application was referred to the JRPP for an impartial assessment and determination, and we respect the decision that has been made.”

Mr Eden said while council understands the views of the objectors, it is confident in the process and that the operation of the facility would not have a detrimental effect.

“I believe the former Corowa Shire Council’s decision to allow Cleanaway to make this application and to lease the land within the Howlong Waste Facility will be seen in a positive light when the community looks back on the initiative in years to come,” he said.

“There are strict permit conditions to be adhered to and the community should see this as a fair result for all stakeholders involved.”
