A firecracker literally lit up a romance between Corowa’s Jim and Elaine Oxlee who are celebrating 64 years of wedded bliss.

The milestone was celebrated with a music performance and afternoon tea among family and residents at Karinya House on Tuesday, September 26.

The couple’s daughter Sharon and son Michael explained how their parents first met.

“Dad’s known to be a bit of a larrikin and he was staying at a guest house in Marysville one day when he first saw mum and he threw a firecracker under a dining table to get her attention,” Michael said. “It worked because here we are today.” The couple have another son, Ron, who lives in Coffs Harbour.

Mr and Mrs Oxlee were married at Our Lady’s Catholic Church in Ringwood, Victoria on September 26, 1953.

They had their children and later moved to Corowa for a quieter life in 1980.

The beautiful couple have 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and their son Michael shared with the Free Press his parent’s secret of making their marriage work for 64 years.

“They always say take one day at a time and have a lot of respect for one another,” he said.

The Oxlee family thanked Karinya for hosting a wonderful celebration in honour of Mr and Mrs Oxlee’s anniversary.

“We would like to thank everyone for sharing the afternoon with them,” Sharon said.

“A special thanks to Kaylene Katzer for her singing and also thanks to Barbara Robinson and all her staff for the wonderful care and support they provide to Elaine and Jim.”
