Possible makeover for Barkly Park

The Free Press (Corowa) - - CLASSIES (03) -

Member for Benambra Bill Tilley visited the Rutherglen Cats match at the weekend to announce an election promise.

If elected to government, the Liberal Nationals will provide $350,000 towards an upgrade of

facilities by the Barkly Park Committee of Management, to create a modern and functional multipurpose centre, user-friendly kitchen and viewing deck.

Barkly Park is home to more than 20 sporting and community groups including the Rutherglen Football, Cricket and Netball clubs. Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy said the facilities at Barkly Park were dated and needed support.

“A government I lead will support local sports clubs, instead of spending millions of dollars

upgrading Etihad Stadium in Melbourne,” he said.

Member for Benambra, Bill Tilley said there had been some work done behind the scenes.

“We have been working on this project for several years and the Barkly Park Committee of

Management has put a lot of hard work and fundraising into making this happen,” he said.

“There are so many community groups that use the facilities and it is a hub for celebrations – it really is a gathering place for Rutherglen. “This funding will complement the on field success and lead to an even stronger community.”

Comments attributable to Graham Steed, Barkly Park Committee of Management.

“This is a massive boost for the people of Rutherglen, its many sports teams and the families, schools, community clubs and businesses that are desperate for comfortable and functioning meeting and function spaces.

“The new Barkly Park facility will help Rutherglen grow junior and female sports participation: an area that we have demonstrated leadership. “It will help retain these young people through a lifetime participation in sport and will be an

attractive place for families to spend time at sports.

“This commitment by the Liberal Nationals is testament to the patience, hard work and generosity

of the Rutherglen people who have donated $75,000 in cash and countless hours of donated

labour and skills to contribute to the overall improvement of this sports headquarters.”
