Ella to com­pete in ‘Tradie Olympics’

Af­ter winning gold at the Re­gional Worldskills Com­pe­ti­tion last Oc­to­ber, beauty ther­a­pist Ella James now has her sights set on the na­tional cham­pi­onships.

Ella is study­ing a diploma of beauty ther­apy with GOTAFE in Wan­garatta and will head to Syd­ney in June to rep­re­sent Vic­to­ria in the ‘Tradie Olympics’.

Eleven Gold Medal­lists from GOTAFE suc­cess­fully com­pleted the se­lec­tion process for the na­tional cham­pi­onships and will join the 86 strong team rep­re­sent­ing Vic­to­ria on the na­tional stage.

Ella is em­ployed at Ruther­glen’s Silken Drag­on­fly where she puts her beauty ther­apy skills to use each day she works.

Ella told the Free Press she is look­ing for­ward to com­pet­ing against the best in her field but be­fore she does she will fit in some ex­tra train­ing where she can.

“It’s come around so quick and I am so ex­cited for it,” she said.

“I think it will be a great op­por­tu­nity for me to meet oth­ers in the field.

“There are four other beauty ther­a­pists in Vic­to­ria com­pet­ing, but I don’t know how many oth­ers there are from the other states that I will be up against.”

Ella fin­ished with a high score of 94 at the re­gional com­pe­ti­tion that in­volved stu­dents per­form­ing a se­ries of treat­ments over a six-hour pe­riod in­clud­ing a fa­cial, wax­ing through to a French man­i­cure, even­ing make-up, lash and brow tint­ing.

Ella hopes the com­pe­ti­tion will help get her name out in the beauty ther­apy in­dus­try.

“Peo­ple in the in­dus­try will be at the com­pe­ti­tion and will see what I can do,” she said.

WorldSkills is the big­gest vo­ca­tional ed­u­ca­tion and skills ex­cel­lence event in the world, held ev­ery two years, bring­ing to­gether the best young peo­ple from across the world. Held in Dar­ling Har­bour, Syd­ney, the WorldSkills Na­tional Cham­pi­onships will see 500 com­peti­tors aged 16-24 years rep­re­sent­ing 60 skills.

With more than 20,000 spec­ta­tors, 300 judges, 120 vol­un­teers and $10 mil­lion worth of ma­te­ri­als and equip­ment, com­peti­tors will spend up to 20 hours bat­tling it out with the na­tion’s best tradies.

WorldSkills Aus­tralia op­er­ates in 31 re­gions across Aus­tralia in­clud­ing the Goul­burn Val­ley and North East, with the win­ners in with a chance to rep­re­sent Aus­tralia at the ma­jor world ti­tle held in Rus­sia in 2019. WorldSkills Na­tional Cham­pi­onships, “Skills Show Aus­tralia 2018” will be held at ICC Dar­ling Har­bour, Syd­ney from Satur­day 2 June to Mon­day 4 June 2018.

Beauty ther­a­pist Ella James will com­pete in the Na­tional Worldskills Cham­pi­onships in June.
