Raiders end Roos’ run

The Free Press (Corowa) - - CLASSIES (03) -

Wodonga Raiders put an end to Corowa Rutherglen’s fantastic start to the Ovens & Murray season with an emphatic 90 point victory against the league leaders.

From the first bounce it was obvious the Raiders weren’t going to take the Roos lightly and took advantage of a strong wind at their backs to lead nil at the first break.

The tackling was ferocious and clean possessions were a luxury in slippery conditions.

The wind dropped sharply at the start of the second quarter and the Raiders continued to dominate with the Roos still goalless at half time.

It wasn’t until late in the third quarter that the Roos posted their first major break through the hard work of best-on-ground Jamie Seymour.

Scooter, who was dominant down back, ran the full length of the ground to accept a handball from Pete Whyte and shoot truly from forty metres.

Joe Hansen was the only other Roo to score with a clever kick around the body in the last.

Others to impress were Jordan Lavis and Jack Schilg who have both played consistently good four-quarter games every week.

Jed Griffin and Gus Ingham also put in strong performances, but the full team performance that was obvious in the opening two rounds wasn’t at the same level.

Although midfielders Shaun Huy, Tyson Logie and Hayden Filliponi battled manfully all day, it’s fair to say they lowered their colours against the hard running and skillful Raider’s smaller brigade.

Pete Whyte and Dan Murphy came in for the injured Cody Parker and the unavailable Kade Kuschert.

There’s no doubt that the absence of the experienced and in-form key position duo upset the balance of the team forcing coach Marc Almond to shuffle players around throughout the game.

In all, the Raiders were never troubled by the Roos on a day when almost cyclonic conditions invaded the ground close to three quarter time.

Spectators headed for cover and huddled around the gas heater in weather so different from what we’ve experienced in recent weeks.

We’re confident the Roos can recapture their early season form for their next encounter against the second-placed Lavington Panthers at John Foord oval on Saturday.

Several players were unavailable from previous week’s which left the group with a tough task against the more highly credentialed Raiders outfit.

Kicking with a strong breeze the Raiders bolted away to a forty-one point lead at quarter time and never looked back.

Although down all day, the Roos never gave up and finished the game saving their best quarter for the last booting two goals.

It was good to see Beau Schilg back on the park for his first hit out of the season and have some important touches.

Harley Ralph put up his hand for a return to the seniors with a solid display while Matt Baker, Nash Kusen, Zac Nicholls and Nick Clifton shared the remainder of the awards.

John Conroy, Zach Nicholls and Dean Ew- ing also played their part but celebrations were most evident when Joel Montgomery snagged a major.

Admiration for this group who play their hearts out for their team mates, and the colours they represent, every week.

The Roos started slowly against the Raiders at Wodonga on Saturday with the Raiders kicking the first two goals of the game.

When the Roos finally settled they started to play some good footy of their own. The second quarter started well with the Roos kicking the first goal and were winning their fair share of the ball out of the middle, but could not capitalise on their chances with the Raiders making them on the scoreboard. The trend continued in the third quarter with the Roos showing plenty of fight and competing well but still not much to show for their effort. The last quarter was a costly one for the Roos, with the Raiders increasing their lead as the game progressed.

To the Roos’ credit they fought the game out, but the Raiders were too strong and ran out comfortable winners.

Wet and windy weather conditions made playing conditions tough for both sides in the Roos’ seniors match.
