Corowa Ladies Probus Club

The Free Press (Corowa) - - FRONT PAGE -

The decision by Federation Council to opt for a 50-metre outdoor pool seems to defy logic and rational thinking.

Having participated in the public meeting on March 26 where the four pool options were discussed, participated in the council’s “Draft Ageing Well Strategy” (applauded by councillors at a recent meeting), been involved in the recent community strategic plan consultations and being a regular swimmer myself, I would have thought the indoor 25-metre pool option was clearly the best decision for Corowa and district.

I have also spoken to teachers, local physiotherapists, community health staff and people working in the aged care area and early childhood who can see the benefits of endorsing an indoor pool option. The benefits for an ageing population are obvious, (one in four people are aged over 65 in Corowa) swimming is highly recommended for this age group.

Many have already voiced their strong support for a heated indoor pool open 52 weeks (per annum) and many currently swim and shop in Wangaratta and Wodonga to access an indoor pool.

Young mothers with young children have also been travelling for similar reasons.

Corowa has shown it can change, be innovative and has initiated a range of projects that have responded to the needs of a broader community young and old, with a new cinema, community garden, skate park, playgrounds and bike tracks.

Let us be bold, brave and have the foresight to develop an indoor heated pool that caters for all ages.

Let us increase the number of people swimming, improve tourism and have a facility that responds to real community needs. Corowa Ladies Probus Club next meeting will be on Monday, June 18 at 10.30am at the Corowa Golf Club. The meeting will be followed by a guest speaker. Visitors welcome.
