Federation celebrations in Mulwala
Australia Day Awards 2019 for the Federation Council area will be celebrated in Mulwala on Saturday, January 26. Council will seek Expressions of Interest from community groups or organisations to assist council with the big event.
The official function will include a welcome address, welcome to country, citizenship ceremonies, award presentations, ambassador guest speaker, flag raising ceremony and singing of the National Anthem.
“The successful community group or organisation will work with council to deliver an event that is family-friendly, inclusive and provides an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the occasion,” council’s director corporate and community services Kristy Kay said at council’s monthly meeting on August 21.
Council is sounding out interested parties from August 22 to September 10 and will seek nominations for Australia Day Awards from October 15 to December 3.
Councillors David Longley (from Howlong), Shaun Whitechurch and Norm Wales (Corowa), and Bronwyn Thomas from Mulwala will form part of the judging panel, along with a past award winner, the General Manager and a staff member.
“The panel will consider the level of contribution made to the wellbeing of a community in the areas of leadership, volunteerism, sporting, arts and cultural, environmental or business endeavours,” Ms Kay said.
There are six categories of Federation Council Awards: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Community Project of the Year, Local Achiever Awards, School Achiever Awards.
Schools within the Federation Council area will be invited to nominate two students who have been outstanding achievers in 2018 in either their academic of sporting fields.
Cr Norm Wales described the Australia Day event as “very important for our community”. “Let’s hope we get plenty of nominations,” he added.
Mulwala is looking forward to hosting the event according to Cr Thomas who suggested council conduct information sessions in Mulwala “so everyone can have more importance and make contact with Savernake who host a breakfast”.
She urged people coming from the northern part of Federation Council to call into Savernake for breakfast on route to Mulwala.
The official Australia Day Awards function for the Federation Council area will be celebrated in Mulwala in 2019.
