De­fend­ing pre­miers start well

Corowa’s A Grade started its pre­mier­ship de­fence well against Baran­duda on the weekend, with a five-wicket win.

Baran­duda were bowled out for 111 with Corowa re­quir­ing just 23.2 overs to get the job done.

Tight bowl­ing by captain-coach Mark Athani­tis (4-25) and Joe Hansen (3-12) proved too strong for the Rangers.

Nathan Rhodes top scored with a quick fire 36, sup­ported by a big-hit­ting per­for­mance by Matt Wil­son who found the bound­ary five times.

The side looks again to have a suc­cess­ful year with the likes of Matt Gran­tham, Kade Wil­son, Tyler Eas­ton and Jar­rod Lane still to come back into the side.

Jor­dan Ey­ers, Luke Back­house and Will Sey­mour rel­ished their op­por­tu­ni­ties in the top side.

A Grade scores: Corowa 5/113 (23.2 Overs) (Nathan Rhodes 36, Matt Wil­son 28, Will Sey­mour 18) def Baran­duda 111 (43.2 Overs) (Mark Athani­tis 4/25, Joe Hansen 3/12, Luke Back­house 1/18).

A Grade will now go on to play Kiewa this weekend.

B Grade

B Grade went down by six wick­ets in their sea­son opener against Baran­duda at Baran­duda.

With four Un­der 16s in the side, captain Scott Wil­son won the toss and elected to bat on a hard wicket and fast out­field.

The Roos lost Ja­son Raggett early be­fore Shane Nor­man and Ryan Bev­eridge got the score to 43 in the ninth over be­fore Nor­man went for 28.

They lost Tom Miegel straight af­ter, but two Un­der16s in Bev­eridge and Luke Heag­ney bat­ted well get­ting the score to 76 be­fore Bev­eridge went for a well-made 26.

Heag­ney went for 14 to leave the Roos five for 76 by the half way mark. Josh Closter and Bai­ley Minogue bat­ted well to get the score to 112 be­fore Closter went for 16.

Pa­trick Lavis bat­ted well be­fore be­ing dis­missed. Minogue played a great in­nings as he made 42 and helped the Roos get to 154 be­fore be­ing dis­missed in the sec­ond last over.

In re­ply Baran­duda made a fast start against some in­dif­fer­ent bowl­ing as they raced to 49 af­ter seven overs be­fore Luke Heag­ney picked up a wicket first ball.

Baran­duda con­tin­ued to score freely be­fore Scott Wil­son got the sec­ond wicket with the score at 73. Bai­ley Minogue’s good match con­tin­ued as he col­lected two wick­ets in his two overs as Baran­duda went to the drinks break at four for 118.

Baran­duda made short work of the re­main­ing runs as they fin­ished at four for 161 af­ter 27 overs.
