Corowa delivers “excellent” races

Corowa Race Club Secretary Sheridan Kay said changing the November meeting to the eve of Australia’s biggest race as opposed to running it on the same day, which it had done prior to 2017, has been a positive switch.

“Changing its date has been a really successful decision for us,” Ms Kay told The Free Press.

“Even this year going through until 8pm too was fantastic, people stuck around all the way through to have dinner and enjoy the entertainment and live music. A lot of people came from out of town too which was great.”

The Race Club made the decision to stretch the event out to 8pm on Monday, November 5 to allow racegoers the chance to make a full day of it.

Live music was played by Maurice Milani, while there were also plenty of popular activities for kids.

The influence of seven TAB meetings on the card meant there were great horse fields on the day.

There were full Fashions on the Field competitions this year with an Under 17 boys and girls, Lady of the Day, Millinery and Best Dressed Couple category. The main prize was a $1,000 CIRCA 1936 voucher.

“Fashions was great, we had some excellent judges,” Ms Kay said.

“The event was full of flare and colour, and there was elegance everywhere which was really lovely. The quality of the contestants was great.”

While the first two editions of a race meeting on Melbourne Cup eve have been a raging success, the Race Club will continue to grow and enhance the experience for the town.

“We’re always changing a few things to make it better, this year we had our fashions competition under the sails, and we had our sponsors in a sponsor marquee in front of the track,” Ms Kay said.

“We’re listening to what people want and we’re listening to people’s suggestions, and as a committee, we’re taking it on board and accommodating those suggestions to make it bigger and better again next year.”

Ms Kay said she would like to thank “all of the fashion judges, sponsors and everyone who came along and supported us” for making the event yet again successful.

“There was quite a buzz about the day,” she said.

“I received a few positive messages off people after the day saying it was a great event and staying through until 8pm was a good idea.

“All-round it was just a great day.” Corowa’s next TAB race meeting will be on Sunday, December 30.

The second edition of Corowa’s Melbourne Cup Eve race meeting eclipsed its inaugural event in 2017, with a 10 per cent increase in admission sales confirmed by the Race Club.

The Cup Eve meeting attendance record was established on Monday night as a packed crowd at the Corowa Racecourse enjoyed the races and twilight entertainment.

The Fashions on the Field was very popular on Monday, with a sea of colour and elegance pleasing the judges.
