Men’s basketball roster back up and running
AFTER renewed interest from in and around New Norfolk, a men’s social basketball roster is up and running again at the New Norfolk Sports Centre.
The Derwent Valley Men’s Social Basketball roster which consists of six teams has been set up by Lawitta’s Ben Shaw.
It’s been six years since a men’s roster was run and interest is growing with a good roll up for round one which was played on Sunday.
Speaking just before he played a match for his team the Odd Bods, Ben said he was rapt the roster was up and running again.
‘‘It’s been six years since men’s basketball has been played and I was approached by number of people suggesting we should start up a roster, so I spoke to the sports centre committee and also started up a Facebook page and now have around 100 members . . . it’s a fantastic result.’’ Shaw said.
The roster will run over 10 rounds plus finals.
Games are played on Sundays, with the first at 3pm then 4pm and the final game starting at 5pm.
Shaw said some keen re- cruiting has already started.
‘‘The Hurricanes have Joel Davie playing for them, Joel is a former Hobart Hurricanes player and I believe his brother still plays with that team.’’
If you wish to join a team or maybe umpire or just help out you can contact Ben Shaw through the Facebook page ‘‘Derwent Valley Men’s Social Basketball’’ or just go along to the New Norfolk Sports Centre on Sundays between 3pm and 6pm.
