Arts stal­wart Bishop to be farewelled

THE life of Tas­ma­nian-born bal­let dancer and arts ad­min­is­tra­tor Lau­rence Bishop will be cel­e­brated at a ser­vice in New Nor­folk to­mor­row.

Born at Na­tional Park in 1930, Mr Bishop was ed­u­cated at Ho­bart High School and first took an in­ter­est in bal­let when per­form­ing in a lo­cal am­a­teur theatre pro­duc­tion.

He went on to train with great Czech chore­og­ra­pher Edouard Borovan­sky in Mel­bourne.

He was as­sis­tant artis­tic di­rec­tor with the West Aus­tralian Bal­let be­fore join­ing Bal­let Vic­to­ria in 1972.

Mr Bishop died on March 20. He was 86. A ser­vice will be held at St Matthew’s Angli­can Church in New Nor­folk from 2pm to­mor­row.
