“IS that me?”
That was seven-year-old Grace Matthews’ first question when she won a Young Archies prize at the Derwent Valley Science Expo.
The Young Archies is a junior competition modelled on the prestigious Archibald Prize for portraiture.
Prizes were awarded for portraits of men, women and children from artists up to Year 12 attending a Tasmanian government school.
Grace, of Glenora District School, won the Department of Education Secretary’s Award.
“I think I got it for what I wrote about it,” said Grace, who turns eight this week.
Grace described her entry as a colourful, abstract selfportrait.
Grace’s mother Kathy said found out about Grace’s achievement when she received a call from her daughter’s principal, Andrew Woodham.
“We didn’t even know about it before,” she said.
“We kept it as a surprise for Grace,” grandmother Sue Matthews said, much to Grace’s annoyance.
“We’re very proud of her,” Mrs Matthews said.
