TEN weeks of calm­ing the mind and body are on of­fer at the Der­went Val­ley PCYC as tai chi is added to the list of ac­tiv­i­ties on of­fer.

Glenorchy-based in­struc­tor Bill Pear­son re­cently re­turned from the In­ter­na­tional Tai Chi Health Ex­change in Bei­jing, where he was in­vited to demon­strate and par­tic­i­pate in a num­ber of ex­hi­bi­tions.

Mr Pear­son said it all be­gan when he at­tended the Aus­tralia China Friend­ship So­ci­ety an­nual gen­eral meet­ing in Ho­bart last year.

He met Hong Jie, the di­rec­tor of the Bei­jing Peo­ple’s As­so­ci­a­tion for Friend­ship with For­eign Coun­tries, who later in­vited him to China.

“I was the only Aus­tralian at the event so it’s help­ing to es­tab­lish a very good re­la­tion­ship,” with the so­ci­ety, Mr Pear­son said.

He was one of 87 rep­re­sen­ta­tives from 11 coun­tries in at­ten­dance.

Mr Pear­son, who has or­gan­ised tai chi classes at Ris­don Prison and as ther­apy for mul­ti­ple scle­ro­sis and Parkin­son’s dis­ease pa­tients, won the Ex­cel­lent Per­for­mance Award dur­ing his trip.

Tai chi classes will be on of­fer ev­ery Thurs­day from 121pm at the Der­went Val­ley PCYC.
